A Gap in Church Planter Preparation?

1 02 2010

I just received the new Essential Guide to Church Finances, which combines and updates Richard Vargo’s smaller guides (Financial Reporting, Planning & Budgeting, Internal Controls) and adds some new chapters. The introduction begins with these words:

Churches are one of the most complex financial organizations on the planet. What other entity lives or dies primarily by weekly donor giving, recruits untrained volunteers to manage large sums of money, and requires specialized experience in nonprofit tax law and federal reporting requirements, in which few individuals, let alone professionals, have expertise?

If this is the case, why is it that church planters (like me!) often launch with little or no training in church finance?
